Secondary Production

L. medusa, in comparison with other sedentary dwelling polychaete, exhibits a high rate of secondary production. At least a third of all secondary production comes from numerous, fast-growing juveniles that dominate populations throughout late summer (R. Seitz & L. Schaffner, 1995). A higher portion yet, closer to 50%, is provided by the lesser abundant adults during the spring to early summer period (R. Seitz & L. Schaffner, 1995).
